Look beyond the name of the colour
Start with the shade you enjoy, then compare individual stones. Photographs are a useful introduction, but lighting and screens affect the appearance of colour. Ask to discuss the stone in more detail and request further views where available. A blue sapphire, a pink sapphire and a yellow sapphire can lead to very different choices of setting and metal.
Before deciding, ask about the sapphire’s weight and dimensions, any treatments and the documentation available for that individual stone. An origin or grading claim should relate to the particular piece and its supporting information.
Compare three-stone and cluster settings
A three-stone design places the sapphire between two side stones. Their shape and proportions change the overall outline: half-moon diamonds create a different silhouette from tapered or trillion-shaped sides. A cluster or halo frames the sapphire with smaller diamonds and changes the balance between the coloured centre and the surrounding stones.
